Planning a wedding? Having family pictures taken? Is your smile not as white and bright as you would like it to be? Whitening, also known as bleaching, lightens stains on teeth caused by wine, coffee, tea, food, age or from a previous trauma to your tooth which has caused it to darken.

Whitening can be done with a treatment at the dental office or at home with a system you do yourself.  Whitening can be done on living teeth or teeth which have had a root canal done to them. Whitening examples

Whitening performed at the dental clinic will take anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes for each visit.  The whitening process consists of a bleaching solution applied to the stained or discolored teeth. It is then activated with just heat or a combination of heat and light. The solution is rinsed off, revealing a lighter-colored tooth. This process can be completed in as few as two sessions or as many as ten, depending on the amount of stain or discoloration.

For the at home whitening process, you will schedule an appointment at the dentist for impressions of your teeth. These impressions will be used to make a custom-fitted mouthguard which will hold the bleaching gel. Once your mouthguard is ready for pickup, you will receive the bleaching gel at the same time. The dentist will explain how many hours a day you should wear the mouth guard with the whitening gel inside.
Please keep in mind; it is not uncommon for teeth to become slightly sensitive during either type of bleaching process.
